Placement Tests

Taking a placement test is a requirement if you intend to register for the first time with the Alliance Française of Washington, DC, and have prior knowledge of French. In helping us define which level is most appropriate for you, you will make the best of your learning experience with the Alliance. Placement test may be taken on site at our Wyoming Avenue building, online or may be faxed at your request.

Next Testing Period

Tests submitted outside the testing periods will be corrected but we will not accept registrations after the first week of class, except for people already waitlisted.

  • On Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at the Alliance Française: please do not come any later than 7:30 as the test usually takes about 1/2 hour
  • Via the website or by fax (written test) and by phone (conversation). Written tests should be sent as early as possible since you will be emailed within 10 business days, Mondays through Thursdays, between 10:30am and 5pm.
  • For all group and intensive classes: same dates applicable.
  • For children's classes: please contact Sophie Mededovic, in charge of children's classes: children@francedc.org

Correction of your Placement Test

  • First step: Submit your written test and give a daytime phone number in your contact information sheet! Make sure you do not take more than 20 minutes to complete the test, especially if you are taking it online. After 20 minutes you will be disconnected from our website even though you will still be on the placement test page. Your test will err in cyberspace when you submit it after 20 minutes.
  • Second step: You will receive an email within 10 business days from the Educational Director or an Alliance Française teacher, indicating your level based on your written skills only. This email will also give you information regarding the times and days at which YOU can call us for the conversation test. Please note that emails are sent out in the order in which the written tests are received. The conversation test does not take more than 10 minutes.
  • Third step: We will call you if you have not called us after the original email was sent to you within 10 more days.
  • Fourth step: A last email will be sent to you as per our policy of contacting three times people interested in our activities and classes.
  • Final Step: once you have completed the conversation test, you can enroll in one of the recommended classes.

The Educational Director is usually available for conversation tests Mondays through Thursdays from 10:30am to 5pm during testing periods. You may also be contacted by an Alliance Française teacher.
