SEVEN WOMEN: SEVEN DECADES OF ALLIANCE FRANCAISE THROUGH SEVEN FILMS BY WOMEN

PRESENTED BY

THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE OF WASHINGTON DC AND CAHIERS DU CINÉMA

In partnership with: The National Gallery of Art – Film Department, The Avalon Theatre, American Film Institute, Film at Lincoln Center, UniFrance, The Film Services of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in NYC,  The REACH at The Kennedy Center, and La Maison Française.

The Alliance Française celebrates its seventieth birthday with a series of francophone films directed by women. Programmed by illustrious French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma, the series is inspired by Cahiers’s special issue Une histoire des réalisatrices, an alternative history of 20thcentury film through movies by women. Ranging from established classics by Agnès Varda, the first filmmaker of the French New Wave, and Safi Faye, the first woman to direct a commercially distributed feature in sub-Saharan Africa, to a rediscovered marvel by Virginie Thévenet, a central figure of the ebullient nightlife and art scene of 1980s Paris, the series also includes essential works by Marguerite Duras and Chantal Akerman and Claire Denis’s beloved 35 Shots of Rum. The week will conclude with the area premiere of Patricia Mazuy’s Paul Sanchez Is Back!, a fiery depiction of present-day French reality in the guise of a darkly comedic contemporary western. Director Patricia Mazuy will be present for the screening of her film and Cahiers contributors Nicholas Elliott and /or Paola Raiman will introduce each screening, with additional guests to be announced.

Programmed by Nicholas Elliott, New York correspondent, Cahiers du Cinéma, and Sarah Diligenti, Executive Director, Alliance Française of Washington DC.
